Coles does a better job of teaching and explaining what goes into a story than any writing class I’ve ever taken. All of his points are concise and well explained.
One thing that I particularly liked about this book was how it is laid out and organized. At the beginning of each chapter, there are definitions of terms that are used throughout the rest of the chapter. This helps make sure that everything is very clear and understandable when he goes into more complex ideas. Coles lays out each aspect of writing in order of how you should be writing your story. He starts with explaining characters and how to create them, then moves on to other topics such as conflict, point-of-view, and time. He also does a great job of using examples where they are needed, but not including them too often and congesting the book.
